About Solo Cruising UK

About this site

My name is Janice Kennedy. I’m in my late 50s, based in the UK, and I built this site because when I started researching solo cruising I couldn’t find what I actually needed.

The information was out there — scattered across cruise forums, Facebook groups, YouTube videos, and cruise line websites — but none of it was pulling it together clearly for someone like me: a UK traveller over 55, considering a first solo cruise, trying to understand the supplement, choose the right line, and work out what it would actually cost.

So I built Solo Cruising UK to do exactly that.

What this site is

Solo Cruising UK is a research and curation site for UK solo travellers aged 55 and over. I spend time in the places where real solo cruisers talk — forums, YouTube comment sections, Facebook groups — and I synthesise what they consistently say into honest, practical guides.

I haven’t sailed solo myself yet. I’m not going to pretend otherwise. What I have done is read thousands of first-hand accounts, watched hundreds of hours of cruise content, and built a resource that brings the collective experience of the solo cruising community into one place.

The guides on this site are based on what real solo travellers — people who’ve been on dozens of sailings between them — consistently report. When something is uncertain or contested, I say so. When policies change, I update.

Why I built it

When I started researching solo cruising, I found:

  • Cruise line marketing that made everything sound effortless but skipped the detail
  • General travel sites that covered cruising but not the solo perspective
  • Forum threads that required hours of reading to extract one useful answer
  • YouTube reviews from experienced cruisers who’d forgotten what it was like not to know anything

Nobody was pulling it together for a UK solo traveller in their 50s or 60s, starting from zero.

That’s the gap this site is trying to fill.

What you can expect

Honesty. If a cruise line’s solo policy has a significant catch, this site will say so. If the research on a topic is thin or contested, that’s flagged rather than glossed over.

No jargon. Plain UK English, written for someone approaching this for the first time.

Real voices. Where possible, guides are grounded in what actual solo travellers say — not just what cruise lines say about themselves.

Transparency about affiliate links. Some links on this site are affiliate links — marked with a → arrow. If you book through one, I may earn a commission at no extra cost to you. It’s how the site covers its costs. It never influences what I recommend. Full disclosure here.

Get in touch

If you’ve sailed solo and have experience worth sharing — corrections, additions, or simply your honest take on a cruise line — I’d genuinely like to hear from you. The site gets better with real-world input.
